though a quick scan of the world wide weberverse says they can fly some very short distances. neat!

Yes, for short distances, but highly maneuverable. And the ‘male peafowl’ is extremely aggressive and protective.
He’s dressed to attract attention from anything with eyes. Even color-blind creatures watch a ‘male peafowl’ when he’s strutting his stuff.
There is only one creature not in the least interested in his display… the creature whose attention he is most interested in getting… the peahen.
