Crinoline was a stiff fabric used to make petticoats in the 19th century; the names became interchangeoable (although this is the first I have seen of “crinolen”, rather than “crinoline”).
Back in the dark ages when I used to do a lot of community theatre, that’s how we used to differentiate between types of underskirts. Crinolines were poofier than petticoats!
