  1. yeah, I have never been “hurt” by a shot or blood draw, just the “normal” sting, but still have to take deep breaths while staring at the ceiling

    1. Yeah, I’ve been fortunate to never have had a terrible experience, either, but the “dinosaur brain” just kind of takes over when I’m getting that tourniquet put on…

  2. I have aichmophobia as well, but apparently mine is nowhere near as severe as I used to think.

    1. OOOOOH, is that the name for it?

I’m not so bad that I’ll, like, refuse to get medical treatment (or have to have someone go with me), but I definitely kind of panic when I’m confronted with a needle. I don’t even have my ears pierced!

      1. Needles are absolutely panic-inducing for me, too, though I did almost get my ears pierced when I was nine.

        The piercer jammed mid-puncture.

It took about ten minutes to get it off, during which time it had to be held so that it wouldn’t be dangling from my earlobe.

One guess as to whether I’m ever doing THAT again.

I stick with magnetic earrings, now, though be warned; magnets strong enough to stay on are magnets strong enough to pinch VERY painfully.

        1. How horrific! I wouldn’t go back either!

It was never anything I had strong interest in doing, and the needle aspect didn’t help me! (Plus I knew a couple people who got wicked infections too, so I noped right out of piercing).

        2. (T̶w̶o̶ ̶w̶h̶o̶l̶e̶ ̶f̶r̶i̶g̶g̶i̶n̶’̶ ̶m̶o̶n̶t̶h̶s̶ ̶l̶a̶t̶e̶r̶)

…apparently there’re multiple ways of getting piercings?, ’cause my t̶r̶a̶u̶m̶a̶t̶i̶c̶ ̶i̶n̶c̶i̶d̶e̶n̶t̶ experience didn’t involve a needle, just some rubbing alcohol and a gadget that I remember as looking like a large single hole-punch. (And honestly, if a needle had been involved, I wouldn’t have been.)

I ended up electing to ignore/avoid the t̶r̶a̶u̶m̶a̶t̶i̶c̶ ̶m̶e̶m̶o̶r̶y̶-̶a̶s̶s̶o̶c̶i̶a̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶H̶O̶L̶E̶ ̶I̶N̶ ̶M̶Y̶ ̶H̶E̶A̶D̶ piercing for as long as possible, only to discover about two months later that it had sealed back up without my noticing.

        3. I was actually able to ignore the needle part of things in order to get my ears pierced. Then both got infected and everybody told me that I would just have to get my ears re-pierced after the infections cleared up. Despite everyone saying it was impossible, I cleared up the infections and managed to keep the piercings. Mind you, it was a bloody pain in the ass.

  3. It’s not the needles that bother me, it’s the fear of a bad response again- which starts to cause the bad response, hah. I’ve been such a pincushion the last few years you’d think it’d get easier not harder.

  4. I’m fine with the sight of blood. It’s just the sight of MY blood that I have the problem with..

  5. Yeah, I’ve had a bad draw once… when I was iron deficient anemic… I almost passed out! Got a different nurse after that, who got a vein properly in like 5 seconds. I’m usually pretty good about needles, but some nurses do NOT have the skill. Maybe give the anemic patients to the ones that are good at this from the get-go?
