Same here. Any exotic should not be seen so casually. I’m not saying there should Never Be Any Sugar Gliders As Pets Ever because sometimes there’s extenuating circumstances (as in a friend of mine who basically has a pet possum, but they’re trained in wildlife rehabilitation for them and this particular animal could never be released due to a birth defect).
BUT generally speaking anything other than livestock and traditionally
domesticated animals are not good pets for the average pet owner.
Realistically speaking any animal, no matter how domesticated, should be researched before becoming a pet. Ever animal species, and even breeds are different in mentality, personality and needs.
Domestication doesn’t change that at all. Heck, it creates more problems in some cases.
An average home owner should never own a Shepard breed of dog without some way to constantly stimulate them. EVER. Really it boils down to what the person can handle, what the home can handle and how much research they do before hand.

Late response is late, but this is 100% true and exactly why we don’t have a dog. I KNOW I don’t have the time required to have a mentally healthy dog (ANY breed, though the herders are particularly challenging because they are both smart and active). We have Harley because we both love cats and can provide everything she needs, both physically and mentally. However it is still generally much easier to own traditionally domesticated animals since there are so many more resources available for learning about and providing for their care.
The average house cat hunts and preys upon the most widely varied amount of species on the planet, often just for the hell of it, so please tell me, how they wont attack them because they are “too small”.
