Went to visit my folks in my hometown last week and managed to take a wrong exit, which I haven't done since college, on, like, my first trip home from school. What the heck.
The stars were amazing out in the middle of nowheresville, though. Made me miss the sunroof (though I am certainly glad to be in car I don't have to worry about breaking down in the middle of nowheresville after everything has closed down).

That was the nice part of owning a convertible, we could drive to a dark place then put the top down and lie back to look at the stars. We didn’t have to run around shaking dirt off of blankets and gathering things up if the bugs got too bad either, just drive off until the wind blew them out then either put the top up or park somewhere else 🙂

A good driver will sometimes miss their exit. A bad driver NEVER misses their exit.

I have a fun thing I like to do to city slicker friends when taking them way out into the country. I always make sure we arrive right as night is settling in. The area leading up to my house is very wooded so they can’t see a thing right up until we get to the property and once we are there the trees breaks into a blanket of stars. Never fails to get gasps; even I still get caught in awe.

When we lived out west, we used to drive an hour and a half to get to a real supermarket. The road we took was pretty difficult in summer but after it froze it was as good as any pavement, the highway added a good hour more so most people took the unpaved one. There was one spot where you came around a turn then crested a hill with forest right up to the road on both sides. The sudden view was breathtaking any time, but the first time we went was in winter, the Northern Lights were particularly good that year and that night was one of the best I’ve ever seen. We silently pulled over and just stared for a half hour. There wasn’t a light of any kind for fifty miles in any direction, except for the odd headlight and we just sat there with the lights off…at -30C !! We only had one kid at the time, he was about six and even when we woke him up he just looked in awe with his eyes the size of dinner plates 🙂 We could see the Northern Lights from our house but we lived on an Airbase and the lights were pretty bright there, it was still good when the ywere out but not the same. You could see them in the summer if they were out, my mother visited just after our second was born and when she went out in the backyard to look one night she asked “what’s that brighter light over there ?” I laughed and said “the sun, it never really goes down all the way this time of year, that’s why the kids bedroom has tinfoil on the window” 🙂
