That’s what I was going to say! I’m a Jersey girl currently in FL. Since the day I discovered biscuits, toast is not only used for sammiches. Then there was the day I was exposed to biscuits and gravy…I may have been born in the north but I apparently have a lot of southern tastes
Yes we all aware your (looks one way then the other) SECRET TOAST!!!!!

Grits are…special. A great southern humorist called them the tofu of the south: They take the flavor of what you mix with them. I enjoy them with just salt and pepper (and lots of butter). Some folks throw in cheese and crumbled bacon (and butter), or even eggs over-easy (and butter). Grits with cinnamon and sugar-or-honey (and butter) is good for dessert. Plain Grits (WITHOUT butter), on the other hand, have been outlwed by the Geneva Convention as a crime against humanity’s taste buds.

It’s really a texture thing with me. The flavoring’s not so bad, depending on what’s put in them and assuming they are not just plain or cooked badly.
Always biscuits if there is a choice. Always. I am from upstate New York and it is one of my two favorite breakfasts (the other is a breakfast burrito with bacon and green chillies). The first time I had biscuits and gravy was when I was traveling out west to go to school back in 1991. After the first night’s stop in Virginia we hit a Hardees, and I decided to try biscuits and gravy. I was instantly hooked.
I’m originally from MI, but currently live in Dallas. When I was in MI, the cafeteria at work served grits one morning. Another coworker had gotten them, and when I said I wanted to try them, a girl who grew up in Virginia told me I wasn’t allowed to unless she went with me and showed me the proper way: grits, with lots of butter, and scrambled eggs on the side.
Biscuits make sense to me with honey, or as part of strawberry shortcake, but not as a savory meal with sausage gravy.
I’m glad you had a Grits Ambassador! The first time I had them was disastrous. I still don’t like them, mind you, but I came to realize they weren’t as terrible as they were the first time I tried them.
Never thought of using biscuits as part of strawberry shortcake, we always used angel food cake…but that’s something I’ll have to try!
Man, biscuits are the BEST with strawberry shortcake. I mean, a “shortcake” is a quick cake made with lots of shortening (like a biscuit). Super tasty. I think it’s only in modern times that sponge or angel food cake became a subsitute when “shortcake” is in the name.
When I make shortcake for strawberries or any fruit, I put sugar in the dough to make them cakes. Biscuits are neutral in that they have no sweetening in the dough. So they can go either sweet or savory depending upon toppings.

Because biscuits are DELICIOUS (loads of Southern food is…Except grits. I can’t get those. Believe me, I’ve tried!)
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy toast as well, but if there’s an option, ALWAYS biscuits!

My sister was born in New Jersey. It’s a horrible thing to have to live with for the rest of your life, but at least he got out.
SurlyQueen
Heh. A bunch of my friends around here are from Jersey as well. One of them once described it as “The Wal-mart of America.”
At least it’s not all like Jersey Shore or some nonsense!
bardcrest
I regret to inform you that for the most part it is.

Jersey Shore is a town in Pennsylvania.

Huh, weird. But I was referring to the TV show, which was filmed at the Jersey Shore in NJ ^_^;
