I mean, generally when I eat mildly expired foods I don’t get sick, so kinda XD
I know expiration dates are somewhat flexible, but I’ve always been a bit more flexible in following them than my husband has. I won’t straight up eat obviously spoiled food.
When you live alone you get used to take expiration dates with a certain nonchalance. Things tend to be sold in family size portions (or if you CAN get a smaller portion, it’s way too expensive) – so you pretty much can’t have anything unless you consider it good enough for up to a week past expiration date.
Very true. And some things can last waaaaay longer than their expiration dates. I mentioned eggs elsewhere, but a lot of condiments/sauces too. Like, I’ll keep soy or Worcestershire sauce forever (but not, like, mayo or ranch. That stuff’s going in the trash if it’s much past its date).
Just like my mother said “best before doesn’t mean poison after” and even SALT has an expiry date…it spent billions of years underground but it won’t be good past next Tuesday o.O
The majority of ‘expiry’ dates are for stocktaking purposes, especially canned goods, a lot of them can last for decades past their ‘date’.
Of course the companies and stores get tax breaks for disposing of excess stock by donating it and the food banks get some supplies so it works out in the end, I guess, but it still drives prices up since people expect to see ‘best before’ dates on honey..which by all accounts will be the last thing existing on earth 😉
Milk on the other hand often goes off well before it’s expiry date, and so do bagged salads, so there’s that.
Exactly! My mind was blown by how long eggs can actually last past the expiration date. (I always do the sink/float test if they are especially “expired” though)
At least with milk and produce it’s pretty obvious that it’s gonna make you sick if you eat it!
I never bother doing the sink test, I’ve only ever had one bad egg (not counting neighbours) and while that cleared the kitchen out, it’s never happened again since I started keeping them in the carton instead of in the rack in the fridge door where one can go unused for a long time.
As long as she doesn’t start off with a halfdragon/halforc/halfelf/halfbanshee/halfsuccubus Ranger-Fighter-Rogue-Mage Paladin Bard with more mystical ‘use per day’ powers than most deities.
For beginners, and even for us old farts that like their character sheets on one page instead of a folder full of charts, keeping it simple is the best idea.
We used to play, then it was just me, and eventually the kids got interested, but now we all just play online, seperately because while my youngest shares my sense of humour about gaming we all have vastly different tastes. I prefer plain old 2nd Edition, sometimes 3.5, and I like playing one character class at a time, maybe two like a cleric/paladin who makes you either pay for healing or convert 🙂

Sooo are you saying your typical experience of eating poison does not result in poisoning?

Coincidentally, as always seems to happen…
