When your 2nd Grade kid is told they can bring their favourite ‘animal book’ in to show the class and they take your Monster Manual, it brings a little tear to your eye 🙂
When my youngest was in 4th Grade they were allowed to bring a book from home for ‘quiet time’.
One day I got a phone call from his teacher, she was concerned that the book he’d brought wasn’t ‘suitable’.
It was ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ 🙂
I agreed that yes, it wasn’t a good one and that I’d make sure he brought a different one…since he’d already read it twice.
My oldest, when asked to memorize a poem to read in class in about the same grade, chose ‘The Man in the Moon’ from Lord of the Rings 🙂
“There is an inn, a merry old inn
beneath an old grey hill,
And there they brew a beer so brown
That the Man in the Moon himself came down
One night to drink his fill….”
Never complain about your children spending too much time reading…and help them to learn then turn them loose, because the schools won’t do anything except hold them back.

Heh, never. I still read to my kid, (even though she’s perfectly capable of reading herself) and her most recent favorite is Watership Down. Her teacher was surprised I was reading it to her!

Oh dang, yeah, that is cool! The only reason I would maybe stop her is because we live in the southern US and…well…it’s very church-y around here.
