It almost never happens. That’s why roofs are so steeply pitched in places that get snow. (Although I suppose as we get better about insulating, the snow build-up will become more of an issue)
For a while there, our old roof suffered ice dams. Where stuff melts and freezes and melts and freezes… and then melts, and this wee wall of ice has built up, and the water runs into it, pools, and backs up under the shingles to get in the house.

As someone from the north who has shovelled his roof, I completely agree with your last panel.

“You’ll never have to shovel another driveway” was literally one of the things I said to sell Raf on moving down here.
