Yes, I adore my brick separater (affectionately the Brick Breaker), I was perplexed the first time I got one in a set because they were new and came with zero explanation as to their use, but I figured it out pretty quick and they are a godsend (also the fact that they are orange is great because I mostly do Castle and Pirate themed stuff so, like, all my brinks are grey and brown, so they really stand out.) I still tend to build shambling horrors on accident, but that’s part of the fun for me, though I am dabbling with some kind of weird Wizard Garden every now and again…

All my Lego builds without instructions come out to be shambling monsters for some reason. I’m not particularly “good” at Lego XD

Next look at MOC pages and search MOC instructions http://www.mocpages.com/directory.php/120
Rebrickable also has LEGO instructions from Fans not LEGO themselves and it helps to see the various connections http://rebrickable.com/mocs
Finally, the modular building series teach the sideways building and overlapping techniques.
In addition, you should use a brick separater it makes taking apart the thin pieces of LEGO called plates so much easier.
